CLE, Microsoft, and Habañero partnered in 2003 to build an XML-based document publishing system using the new Microsoft Office Word 2003. The system produces material that can be simultaneously distributed in a variety of forms, including highly formatted print documents and rich online content. With this solution, organizations can reduce production costs while improving productivity, accuracy, and consistency.

The system is suitable for documents such as corporate policies and procedures, product documentation, and reference books. Authors and editors use Word in combination with a custom schema to mark up content with XML tags. Word provides XML capabilities and a familiar, intuitive user interface. The publishing system can be integrated into the customer's environment, drawing data from a variety of other data sources and automating repetitive tasks. Office smart tags can be used to tie XML elements and attributes to external data sources.
