Migration from SP 2003/CMS 2002 and other platforms to MOSS 2007

On this page:

Why migrate to MOSS 2007?

Many customers have built solutions on Microsoft’s older technologies such as SharePoint Portal Server 2003 and Content Management Server 2002. Some customers have enterprise solutions built on competitive technologies such as ECM Corporation’s Documentum or IBM’s Lotus Notes.

Businesses operating with legacy applications run the real risk of losing support and must grapple with limited features and out-of-the box capabilities.

Migrating legacy systems to MOSS 2007 will help you do the following:

  • keep up with software upgrades to ensure patches and product support are continued
  • take advantage of new and improved features within the updated platform
  • standardize business systems to a single or more unified toolset
  • reduce end-user confusion around multiple tools and technologies

Migration logistics

Once you determine there is business value in moving from your SharePoint 2003 or CMS 2001/2002 platform to MOSS 2007, you may face some additional challenges:

  • out-of-the-box migration tools only handle the most typical uses of previous technologies
  • deprecated programming interfaces (APIs) require developers’ code to be ported or rewritten for MOSS 2007
  • new features (such as workflow and web content management) are changing the way people think about implementing SharePoint
  • changes to the way information is managed in MOSS 2007 (such as item-level security, integration of team sites with portal areas, content types, and shared columns) means old information structures may need to be revisited
  • end users require training on using new features
  • new administration features require new levels of governance

How we help you

Habañero has a long history of working with Microsoft technologies, and we have experience with all previous versions of SharePoint and Content Management Server. Additionally, we’ve integrated with and leveraged many other competing technologies, such as Lotus Notes.

Our migration support generally begins with a migration planning project. Migration planning helps you do the following:

  • understand the scope of a migration project
  • clearly define the business drivers and measures for a successful migration
  • identify areas for process improvement through using the new technology
  • identify technology and resource gaps that need to be dealt with during a migration
  • understand the costs and timeline required for migration
  • plan for the moving of data and customizations in a timely, effective, and minimally disruptive manner
  • address additional necessary considerations beyond the simple upgrade such as impact, training/education, governance, design, architecture and infrastructure, change management, scope control, and licensing
